Our Research Associates

Accountability International (AI) has always been involved in some strategic advisory and consulting work with partner movements, sharing our knowledge and expertise in partnerships that have contributed to AI’s overall budget. We have also always used those funds to co-sponsor our emerging start-ups until funders could step in or to implement projects that we deemed worthy.

Now we will be amplifying that aspect of our work going forward. AI (partly through the new consulting arm Accountability for Change) will very actively be seeking consulting work, piece contracts and other development work as a means to become a fully-fledged hybrid NGO. Hybrid NGOs are becoming the norm as activists struggle to access funds for niche work that is not covered by the general funding landscape.

The Research Associates will also be there as a resource for the traditional projects AI is running with a variety of financial partners.

Eka Esu has over 25 years of experience working at national, regional and global levels conceptualizing, facilitating, managing and supporting diverse programs, initiatives and partnerships, including extensive experience and expertise in research, program management and grant-making related to SRHR, HIV, LGBTQ, sex work, child marriage, young people, leadership and NGO strengthening

Francis Joseph Phiri is the Project Coordinator for the Mental Health Users Network of Zambia (MHUNZA) and Director at Bwalo Global Development Trust in Zambia serving both organizations on a part-time basis. Francis served in the Ministry of Health at Health Centre, District, Training Institution and National levels as Health Technologist, District Health Inspector, Lecturer and Administrator for a period of over 20 years, with a background in Biostatistics and Epidemiology and extensive experience in Community Engagement, having served for 5 years as a Project Coordinator for Kafue Adolescent Reproductive Health Project a Youth pilot project documented by the World Bank Sourcebook of HIV/AIDS.

Lynette Keneilwe Eyde (she/her) is a Southern African-based African Public Health & Strategic Engagement Consultant. She also practices as a traditional healer (Sangoma). Lynette has over 15-year adaptable expertise in designing macro and micro-level human rights and gender-affirming health systems for communicable and non-communicable diseases. She has worked prominently on HIV/TB, SRH and COVID-19 and is working on country preparedness for vaccines and other commodities. Her work remit is expansive, covering sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), South-East Asia and Latin America.

Michael Schmidt is a veteran African participatory democracy, artistic freedoms and human rights activist, researcher, investigative journalist, media consultant, and the bestselling author of six non-fiction books. Michael worked in the field in 47 countries across six continents, from Mexico to Mali, Brazil to Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka to the Solomon Islands. He is the strategic relations and research director of Johannesburg-based human rights non-profit Hammerl Arts Rights Transfer (HART), a founding organisation of the Amani: Africa Creative Defence Network, and of Safe Havens – Freedom Talks (SH|FT).

Anthony is a social development professional with particular interest in equality and diversity, Sexual Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) and social justice. For over a decade, Anthony has been involved in designing and implementing initiatives and strategies to improve the SRHR landscape nationally, regionally and globally. As a trained psychologist, research for development, and advocacy expert, Anthony has been at the frontline, engaging with national and international stakeholders on social inclusion programmes. He is passionately committed to contributing his quota in different capacities including but not limited to helping organisations chart their courses through strategic review and planning; social formative research and impact evaluation; learning and growth; and championing strategic engagements with stakeholders to challenge narratives and break barriers.

Philip is a people-oriented activist and professional with over ten years of demonstrated ability in delivering mission-critical results. Philip is a non-binary Consultant in Public Health and Human Rights for marginalized populations, with a focus on those surviving at diverse intersections of vulnerabilities. Their work is a community targeted with evidence-based impact, as they had instituted a grassroots community clinic within an LGBTQI+ community centre while providing technical support in the set-up and operations of other “One-Stop shops” in Nigeria; ensuring the provision of quality healthcare services to marginalized populations within the country.
